When Is Black History Month Celebrated And Why?

Black History Month is celebrated in February in North America and in October in most of Europe.

It’s a time to learn about and honor the achievements, struggles, and the important role Black people played in shaping the respective nation’s story.

Carter G. Woodson, known as the ‘father of Black history,’ started it in 1926.

He wanted to teach Black history all year, but he chose February because it has the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

They were important figures in ending slavery, which is what makes it all the more special.

Woodson’s idea grew, and in the late 1960s, it became Black History Month. President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized it in 1976.

Each year has a theme; this year, it’s about Black resistance.
